4 Tips To Enhance Docket Control

As litigation paralegals, we work in a very fast paced environment. Docket management or docket control is the backbone of a successful practice. When we make sure that the deadlines are met and tasks are tracked and delegated efficiently, we avoid costly mistakes. Prime Paralegal Group has four essential tips to enhance docket control:

Invest in Technology and Docketing Software

There are many reliable, docketing softwares that help us reduce the risk of error in docketing and scheduling. These softwares can be game changers. A few of the softwares, to name a few, that our paralegals have used to manage dockets are: Clio, Practice Panther, & Practice master. These softwares automate the tracking of important dates, allows you to send reminders, and generate reports. Entry of important events not only reduces risk of error, but also frees up time in the long run to focus on substantive work.

Immediate Calendar Entry

This tip may seem so redundant. Believe it or not, one of the most common reasons for a missed deadline is because it was not entered into the system immediately upon receipt and forgotten. Entering a calendar entry immediately is one of the simplest, yet most effective practices for maintaining your docket. Whether it is a court date, a client meeting, or a deadline, entering these dates immediately will mitigate the risk of something being overlooked.

Ticklers

Oh, the power of a tickler! Setting up reminders leading up to a mission critical deadline allows for the necessary tasks or preparations to be completed. It is important for paralegals to practice using ticklers as a proactive approach to help stay on top of deadlines. Ticklers will help to reduce any last minute stress, overall.

Clear Communication

Docket control isn’t just about calendaring dates. It is also about clear communication. Everyone should be on the same page about deadlines and what needs to be done to meet those deadlines. It is very important to inform your legal team of their rules and responsibilities for what needs to be done in anticipation of a certain event. Prioritize those periodic meetings with your team to provide updates, delegate tasks, and anticipate and identify any potential issues that may come up. A cohesive team effort equals productive docket control.
